Despite the variations of defining “reflection,” there are many commonalties and elements that are vital to the term, such as “cognitive and affective process(es),” active engagement, triggered by or response to a situation, “examining one’s responses,” and “results in integration of the new understanding into one’s experience” (Rogers, 2001, p. 41). Without reflection, individuals may miss the opportunity for growth and clarity for both current beliefs and future experiences. Within higher education, reflection is important for students to understand their classroom education and apply it to either their concurrent internships or future careers. For this paper, the article on reflection in higher education by Dr. Russell Rogers will be critiqued, compared to my interpretation and concept of reflection, and applied to my current internship and reflection experience. Reflection can empower students and show them the value of their education, for it is able to further their growth and challenge them beyond their comfort zone. On the flip side, reflection can help students interpret negative experiences and identify areas of growth within their learning or skillset. Reflection is ultimately a powerful tool within higher education, for it empowers the student to value their learning and grow within their understanding of themselves and the world around
