I looked at my sister Annie and she was paler than I’ve ever seen her before. I know the mistress at the workhouse had done something to her. I could feel the anger build up inside of me. I gave her this glare and asked what she did to Annie. Old Bert yelled at me for disrespecting the mistress and he threw us in the hen house. I held Annie’s hand and it was colder than mine. I put my head against Annie’s chest to make sure she was still breathing. At that moment I could hear Annie moan. I let out this huge yelp and the hens went clucking and flapping their wings. I pick the snow up from the ground and let Annie drink from the snow. Once she finishes, she turns her head and told me to make them stop staring at her. I was confused and thought she was just talking about the hens. Than she tells me that she is hungry. I think to myself and know that there’s nothing really that I can give Annie that she could eat. Just to make myself feel better I start thinking about our teacher we had at the workhouse. She taught us how to write our names and read us stories from the Bible. I look over at Annie and she fell asleep and I remembered that sleeping in the cold could kill you. I start to freak out and I start to shake Annie till she wakes up. The mistress always told us that the cold would send you to sleep and you would never wake up again. She starts grumbling and tells me that she wants to sleep. I then told her to get up and walk. She starts complaining and sits back down. I told her to get up and walk once more. Annie’s eyes open but she isn’t looking at me, she’s just staring at plein air. As soon as he looked back at the fish, it was done cooking. Travis grabbed some flat rocks and put the fish on the stone tablets. He handed us the fish and I was eating the fish like a pig. I looked at Annie and she was taking little baby bites each time. I started asking Travis how life was for him living in the wilderness. Travis told me that it’s grand and that he makes new stories to tell each day. I told him that I can tell stories. I would always keep the kids up all night at the workhouse because of my stories. He then afterwards, told us that he could tell a few good tales as well. Annie and I asked him to tell us a story. Travis smiled and leaned back against the cave wall and started to tell us a story. He was telling us a story of a wolf woman who was once an angel from Heaven but wanted to stay on Earth. But after staying on Earth for the longest time, the angel became a wolf.
