Dramaturg: Play Analysis

For this project my teammates and I started off by bouncing around ideas for what scene would be best to summarize both the play as well as each of our group’s contributions to the project. After we narrowed down the selection of scenes we ended up choosing the scene where Marquis gives his speech because we felt that it was the best scene for our goal. This proved to be an interesting scene to cover due to the powerful message of gun violence and how it is a problem in our cities. We hope that through this scene and our efforts to perform it we will be able to demonstrate both the theme of the play as well as the overall message it gives to its audience. My role as a dramaturg was to analyze the script in order to find the overall theme and message of the play as well as it’s tone. I teamed up with the other dramaturge in our group who covered the research of the setting of the play and events that relate to the play. In our collaboration we were able to do our part in understanding the setting and tone of our scene. This helped in my other role as a actor as that provided the biggest problem for me during this scene. I am by no means and actor and have not had the same experiences as the main character marquis and worried that this lack of perspective would hurt our scene’s message. In order to correct this problem, my research as a dramaturg was very helpful. I was able to prepare for my role as an actor by. I learned a lot about my character and am better able to look at the situation as my character would look at it.
