In Wayne Johnston’s novel, The Divine Ryans the Momary dreams are significant because they represent much of what the novel is about. The dreams signify sexuality, secrecy, and Draper Doyle coming-of-age. Draper Doyle is visited by the ghost of his father and these visitations are always followed by the dreams of Momary. Caesar is brought to the senate where he eventually is stabbed by the conspirators, his friends, his allies, and the people he trusted. The conspirators didn’t think of the reproductions of their actions and they have now started a war. They lose the battle against Mark Antony, some conspirators commit suicide, and some are executed. Shakespeare wanted us to develop sympathy for Julius Caesar through the betrayal of his friends, his overthrow of power, and the ultimate death of his once friends.
Siegfried Kracauer, like Andre Bazin, was interested in viewing cinema from a realist perspective. When talking about their ideas, Bazin was more focused on capturing reality that already exists, whereas, Kracauer focused his attention on cinemas ability to redeem reality. To explain this would be to say, where the viewer is able to tap into the unconscious world of modernity but comes back to reality by the camera's gaze in the world of cinema. All in all, Kracauer was a German film theorist and believed that film should show the reality of the world. Kracauer believed that the Lumiere Brothers had demonstrated “the true domain of the cinema in the right manner”.
I Dreamed a Dream is a soliloquy piece, sung by Fantine during act one of Les Misérables (1980). Fantine has just been fired from her factory job after it is discovered that she has an illegitimate child and takes to selling herself on the streets to pay for medicine for her daughter. It is here that ‘I Dreamed a Dream,’ is sung as a way of progressing the story and providing a realisation by the character of her unfortunate situation in life with the song being composed as a way of expressing the feelings of Fantine as she wonders where her life went so wrong as to descend to her present predicament. Throughout the song an anguished, during and impoverished Fantine reminisces on happier days and descends back to the harsh reality that is her hopeless life. I Dreamed a Dream is set in common time (4/4) with a steady set tempo throughout the piece, de despite significant changes in dynamic, texture, modulation and emotion.
