Dream Psychology Essay Dream psychology is the study of dreams and trying to understand what they mean. Dreams can’t always be understood directly. Dream psychology is understanding not what the actual dreams are, but how they are trying to tell you about your current problems and conflicts. Although there are many theories based on the idea of dream psychology they are all different. Every theory has its faults and they all have some shred of proof to them. Carl Jung bases his theory on the idea of threat-simulation theory and the activation-synthesis theory. I believe that the theory by Jung, dreams reveal more than they conceal, is the best because it has more of a basis on what we encounter in our sleep cycles. Jung and Freud worked closely together for years and believed in the same ideas of what goes into understanding the subconscious. But in 1912, Jung criticized what Freud thought was the actual meaning of dreams. Soon after this Jung went on to develop his own theory and his own ideas. While both had similar ideas of behavior and dreams, for example, they were nothing alike. Jung and Freud believed that environment (nature) helped develop children and behavior. With dream theories, Freud and Jung are total polar opposites. Jung believed that dreams present the dreamer with revelations to resolve emotional or religious problems and fears. Jung based this on the continual-activation theory. The continual-activation theory is a theory that is related to the REM sleep cycle and dreams are just the brain trying to make sense of memories we have throughout the day. The theory is that dreams are just a result of the brain activation and synthesis. With our brains actively working even as we sleep, we are constantly using our perception to make sense of what we have seen during the day. Whereas with the idea of sensation and our senses, all four of the sense, and relaying with outside stimuli don’t have a really big factor in our ability to dream and what we dream about. With Jung’s theory perception is a big part. The brain collects and stores the information we have collected during the days and how they relay to be in our dreams. Our brain takes the emotions and problems we have encountered during the day and pushes the information into out subconscious so we can solve them. Perception plays a part in the theory with the emotions being taken and put into the dreams just like in Jung’s
