Skepticism is the force that drives philosopher to continue challenging the unquestioned mass opinions. Skeptics are people who deny that we have knowledge about a specific subject. For example, a skeptic of the external world believes that we do not have any knowledge of the external world due to our perception of the world. Skepticism of the outside world argues that due to our perception, we are unable to have knowledge of the outside world. For instance, our eyes have deceived us do to illusions, like when hot asphalt looks like it has water on it. Even though we know there is no water, how can we trust our own perception if our eyes have deceived us in the past. Uneventful dreams such as going to the store or mowing the lawn can be convincing enough for you to be unaware that you are dreaming. Skeptics argue that because you are not able to distinguish between some dreams and the external world, then one is unable to trust their own perception. The dreaming argument begs the question that if you can not distinguish between dreams and the external world on certain occasions then you cannot be certain that you are not dreaming at any moment of your day. Opposers of this sceptical scenario might protest that they know they are awake therefore they are not dreaming, but they have no evidence to back their claim because they are using the senses that have deceived them in the past. They are unable to obtain any knowledge about whether they can trust their senses. Even if their perceptions are correct, they still have no reason to back their claim so their argument would be considered a true belief in the eyes of the skeptics. A true belief is a belief that someone may have that is true but does not have any reason behind it. In this scenario, the opposers to the skeptic might believe they are awake and this might be true but they have no evidence or reasoning to support their claim. So according to the skeptics, there is no way to prove that one is not dreaming therefore one cannot assume their current situation is not a dream.
