“Humans spend roughly one-third of their lives sleeping, and laboratory research indicates that about a quarter of the sleep period is filled with dreaming” (Chara). Sleeping is something humans must do to survive. When people sleep they usually dream but the reason is still not completely clear. There are many different interpretations of dreams, why we dream, and the meanings. There are also different types of dreams that are still being studied. Throughout history different cultures have interrupted dreams differently. “The ancient Egyptians thought of dreams as simply a different form of seeing, with trained dreamers serving as seers to help plan battles and make state decisions.” Some believe that this is how the Egyptians thought of how to build the pyramids. “The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that dreams were equal parts predictions of future events and visitations by the dead.” This could also be shown in christianity history, profits’ “visions” were often seen while dreaming (Kluger). “People throughout the millennia have pondered the meaning of those years of dreaming, and their answers have ranged from useless fictions to psychological insights to the mark of God.” The earliest writings of dream interpretations include the Epic of Gilgamesh and Chester Beatty Papyrus, date all the way back to 3500 BCE. “When people fall asleep, brain activity changes throughout the night in cycles of approximately 90 to 110 minutes” (Chara). Multiple labs have been done on these cycles. “Freud thought dreams were a way for people to satisfy urges and desires that were unacceptable to society.” Many people think of dreams in different ways.“There are many theories about why we dream, but no one knows for sure”
