Dred Scott Decision Who was Dred Scott? Dred Scott was a man who thought slavery was enough. Dred Scott was a man who was born into slavery around 1795. As Dred Scott got older he had started working in two free states shortly after his first owner died. Scott was then tired of being a slave and decided he wanted his own freedom, not just for him but for every other slave as well. A man named John Emerson had taken Scott from Missouri to Illinois, which is where Scott found the love of his life Harriet Robinson. Awhile after Emerson died, Scott tried everything he could to get his freedom from Emerson's widow. Around 1846, Harriet and Dred scott decided to file individual lawsuits for their freedom. When Dred Scott was given his freedom, he decided to take a job as a porter, at the Barnum's Hotel. But around a year later, Dred Scott died of tuberculosis on September 17, 1858. The Dred Scott case was of course the most popular and biggest deal in American politics at the time. Most abolitionist worked hard in the campaign to help Dred Scott, but most of them were also enemies with the bigger union. The case affected many people by stating that slaves and civilians such as Dred Scott, couldn't make rights like Scott did and that it was unfair to argue with the union about freedom. Another effect of the dred scott decision was that the southern slave owners, thought it was very wrong. They were very upset and against this decision. The decision limited slavery in almost every state. Since this decision was made, it helped the balance between the North and the South. When Dred Scott died, the impact on the nation was very strong. Dred Scott was a legacy to them, because he helped not only himself but everyone in the nation.
