Dress Code Effects On Women

1229 Words5 Pages

“She’s asking for it.” That’s what society has to say about rape culture and the demoralization of women. From the young age of eight, a young girl has begun to feel shameful of her body. She no longer feels comfortable in her own skin. She lives in fear as to wonder what consequences she shall face today. She will begin to see herself as a lesser value to the world. She must be a “lady”, thus meaning she no longer can sit how she wants nor wear what she wants. All young girls will face this same epidemic for the world’s view on women and their bodies as objects. Women are being degraded, disrespected, and endangered because the world’s aspect on women do not deserve respect and they only seek attention. Dress code has been proven to be …show more content…

Music is very popular in today’s society, but most of its lyrics are degrading women. Rappers are well-known for referring to women as “bitches”, “sluts”, and “whores”. This is how women are characterized, presumed to be “whores” who are always “slutting around”. Within the media, slut shaming has become quite infectious. A man can show off his body and only receive compliments, not complaints, but for a woman, if she shows off her body, she’s a “whore”(Delarato). It is a crime for a woman to show how good she looks because her body is overly sexualized. Society has created rules, just as dress code has, that it should be forbidden for a woman to show her skin. A woman’s body is seen as a toy, she is not seen as human (Heflick). The media tends to forget she has feelings and only sees her body parts. If any person sees a woman’s shoulder or thigh dirty thoughts fill into his mind, as if she wants sexual attention, when in reality she is trying to show how she has gained more muscles in her thighs. Those body parts that have been sexualied have purposes. Breast have a purpose, that purpose being to feed babies not seduce men and women. Yet, society still has not come to accept the fact of the matter that women’s sexualized body parts exist for a reason and …show more content…

Horrific. Traumatizing. Two words that describe one of the most disgusting crimes to ever occur to a woman. The crime you ask? The crime is one that many can not own up to, not even the victim, the crime is rape. In America approximately every 98 seconds sexual assault occurs (“Victims of Sexual”). In most cases, it is female victims who have experienced such assault. One out of six women will or have experienced sexual assault, attempted rape, or complete rape (“Victims of Sexual”). Sadly, society’s aspect on the issue is that it is the woman’s fault for she provoked the incident. No woman asks for this, so blaming women for these tragic cases is absolutely absurd. In addition, the world has lost most of it’s respect for women. They often use the term “boys will be boys” and this is just an excuse for their behavior (Zhou). If the world taught boys to respect women and not see them as objects that are supposed to be used for their own pleasure, women would not have to hide. Women would not be so shameful of their bodies and left feeling disgusted with themselves (Halkidis). Raised to respect women and giving them a different outlook on what a woman’s body is could fix the society’s biggest problem. Everyone just needs to accept a body is a body, not matter what gender. People do not degrade or disrespect men for their bodies, so why must they do it to women? It’s
