The character I choose to write about is Dina in the story Drinking Coffee Elsewhere. The significant interpretive question that the story raise about the character is that why Dina decided to go to Yale in the first place? My scene takes place before the story where Dina is writing an application essay to Yale but due to fact on how she was raised and the experience she had with her abusive father and a alcoholic mother had a huge influence and affected her in a way that she seems to have a lack of confidence in herself. She was writing her application essay to Yale she didn’t have self confidence in herself that Yale will accept her. At the end of the scene she heard a voice of her mother telling her to believe in herself which help Dina build a little confident in herself. The literary techniques I used are imagery which reveals that Dina has lack of confidence in herself, diction to show that the word choice I choose has revealed that Dina is nervous about writing her essay to Yale, and Dina’s …show more content…
In the end of the scene her mother’s voice appeared “...she hear this voice whispering to her. The minute she hear the voice it sounded so familiar. The voice sounded comforting and after hearing the voice she felt a little confident in herself.” The words that her mother had tell her was “Dina you can change your life just believe in yourself and the past will just be in the past.” This shows Dina’s mother cares a lot about Dina and even though her mother isn’t physical with her but her mother will always be there in her heart. It also shows that Dina and her mother has a good relationship and Dina loves her mother despite the fact that she wasn’t alway there for Dina when she was still alive. After Dina hear her mother’s voice it has a huge impact on her by building up her confidence in herself which gives her confidence to apply to
