“Driving Miss Daisy” Ruth Casey once said that, “It only takes on person to change your life: you.” This quote defines many things, one of them being people. In almost every case, there is a story about how someone was able to change himself or herself by defeating their biggest enemy, themselves. But, it some cases, many need another to come into their lives to help them make changes. Sometimes, even for the better. In the beginning of the play, when Daisy first see’s Hoke, she is not very welcoming to him. Instead, she tells him to sit and do nothing. However, with some convincing, Hoke is able to change her ways. Finally, he convinces her to let him drive her to the grocery store, which she reluctantly allows him to do. After this, she starts allowing him to drive her many other places like the synagogue and into different states to see her family. Later in the play, Daisy seems to lighten up to many others. When Hoke and her think about her old maid that had passed away, she recalls that she appreciated her help, instead of being harsh to her memory. During a storm, Daisy’s power goes out, and the roads became icy so her son, Boolie, was not able to help her. However, when Daisy hears someone coming into the house, she expects it to be Boolie, but instead, Hoke walks into her kitchen. For the rest of the day, they spend time together and throughout the whole time, Daisy couldn’t help but think about how grateful she is for Hoke’s help. This shows that Daisy was not only glad for his company, but she was also glad that she had kept him around as her chauffer. Hoke also shows his general concern for her, and his want to help throughout many parts in the play.
