Drug abuse in adolescent years stems from certain reputations within our culture that young people should experiment with illegal substances before adulthood. While attending both an all-boys catholic high school and a creative arts high school, there is a perspective on how administrations should handle drug abuse in their school systems. At the creative arts high school, abuse of drugs comes with the territory of being an artist. It would seem from an outsider looking in, that students abuse drugs to get creative. They use those creative feelings as inspiration for their art. To an outsider, it would seem that drug use is growing and is normal for some students. No one ever thinks that he could be that person. Usually, parents try to shelter children from drug abuse and harmful vices that could ruin the rest of their lives. However, parents can’t definitely prevent children from going down the wrong path of choosing to try drugs. Many times, young people are introduced to drugs by friends, who have already been exposed to drugs, and then proceed to peer pressure others. Teenagers may look to drugs as an answer from stress, loneliness, or low self-esteem. These teens seek an escape from reality and doing drugs seems like the best option. Lastly, teenagers might look to drugs simply out of curiosity to both explore and to feel like an adult. However, students have witnessed both the ruination effect of drug abuse on friends who have abused drugs, have become dependent on them, and are now looking for help and struggling to regain control of their lives. Provided, if there were to be a drug prevention meeting, the administration would be giving students the opportunity to comprehend the long-term effects of drug abuse. The teachers should be aware of how impactful drug abuse is to the development of their still growing students mentally, physically, and emotionally. Teachers should be informed of the different types of drugs and why students choose them. For example, teachers should take notice of the many steroids that student athletes inject or ingest, in order to enhance their performances during practice or in the game. Teachers should also take notice of students not only taking steroids to enhance their performance for sports, but to also students who enhance their physical appearance because they feel inadequate based on peer standards or trendy American beauty standards. The highest growing drug of choice for teenagers is the prescription medicine to counter the effects of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly known as (ADHD). Teenagers are abusing prescription ADHD medicine such as Adderall and Ritalin to help aid weight loss. It also helps with studying, especially on important tests such as the ACT, SAT, or any other standardize tests. Teachers need to be more aware of the factors and reasons why teenagers abuse drugs, depending on maturity, age, gender, ethnicity, culture, and environment they live in. Lastly, teachers need to be aware that the earlier they can prevent a long term abuse of
