Drug Abuse Zachary Corbin and Gelana Groce were too young drug addicts that had fallen in love at a music festival in New Orleans after exchanging tabs of lysergic acid diethylamide, a drug better known as LSD. One thing led to another and Gelana ended up pregnant with Zachary’s child. They had scheduled their wedding date on March 25th, 2017, but things would not go to plan for this worrisome couple. Gelana stopped her use of drugs as soon as she found out she was pregnant, Zachary, on the other hand, would fall in and out of addiction over the next couple of months. Drug abusers need to be helped, especially women who are pregnant and abusing drugs. Children of parents who abuse drugs are often abused or neglected, because the parents become engrossed in their drug addiction. They put their drugs before the mental and physical stability of their children. This can also cause children to become familiar with drugs and start to experiment with them, “In 2013, an estimated 24.6 million Americans aged 12 or older—9.4 percent of the population—had used an illicit drug in the past month. This number is up from 8.3 percent in 2002. The increase mostly reflects a recent rise in use of marijuana, the most commonly used illicit drug” (Hanson). This would cause a never ending cycle of abusive parents and early addicts. Dependence can vary from drug to drug, whether it be physical, psychological, or both. Physical dependence becomes apparent with the drug intake is decreased or stopped involuntarily by illness or withdrawal. Psychological dependence is indicated when the user relies on a drug to produce a feeling of well being. This can cause the user to become obsessed with the drug and focuses only on obtaining and using the drug. Tolerance does not always develop, but if it does, it makes the user want to increase the dosage to feel the same as it did when they first started to use the drug.
