A look at the drug culture in America shows that a significant portion of the country’s population engage in drug or substance abuse in a manner that impacts their lives in negative or adverse ways (Goode, 2). This paper offers a drug analysis based on the case of American superstar and singer, the late Whitney Houston. The singer died of a drug overdose in 2012, but her stories of drug abuse were nothing short of ubiquitous in the country’s media platforms during earlier times, beginning in the 1990s (Corley). Later on, she confessed of this sense of suffering and desperation and even opted to go into rehab in 2004. She admitted that she abused alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and other drugs. During the time, however, Whitney continued to profess her undying love for her husband, who continued to promote her abuse of illegal drugs (Staff). Undeniably, this shows a completely different side of the singer, a person who was willing to fight the challenges that life threw at her. In order to protect her family, she even denied drug usage and challenges in her marriage. It is appalling to note that by the time Whitney accepted that she needed professional help; she had suffered some serious and detrimental consequences of drug abuse. The singer then divorced Brown in 2007 after going through very hard times with him. It is so unfortunate to note that despite her efforts to quit drug abuse, the singer suffered a relapse that took her life in 2012 to a drug overdose. A rendition of the lyrics in the verses shows that it is all about a situation of a breakup between two lovers. Throughout the verses, the singer offers messages of farewell to a lover, a longtime partner, with whom they are parting ways. Whitney attempts to imply to the audience that romantic relationships need not to end with bitterness and bad feelings for an ex-lover. At the beginning she indicates, “If I should stay/ I would only be in your way/ So I'll go but I know/ I'll think of you every step of the way.” Such implies that she really adores the person, and she is leaving him with an understanding that it would be the correct thing or action of safeguarding his interests. In the second verse, the signer indicates that, “I hope life treats you kind/ And I hope you have all you've dreamed of/ And I wish you joy and happiness/ But above all this I wish you love.” In other words, despite the fact that she is leaving, she is still in love with her partner, and hopes that he does great without her.
