Drug use and music are seen in a comparable and conflicting light in Baldwin’s story. Sonny does not get the support he wants to become a musician, and a way he copes with this is using heroin. Drug use for Sonny is a means of escape from his suffering over the tragedies in his life. After the narrator’s daughter passed, Sonny wrote him a letter in which he explained part of his drug use: “I can’t tell you much about how I got here. I mean I don’t know how to tell you. I guess I was afraid of something or trying to escape from something and you know I have never been very strong in the head (smile)” (Baldwin, 127).
