I believe that the greatest challenge facing my generation is drugs. Every person has been offered drugs at least one point in their life. Based on this one decision, there life can be changed, making them go on the right or wrong track. According to a student drug use survey (SDUS) “students and youth more commonly use alcohol and drugs than any other age group.” The most common type of drug used by Canadians is alcohol. The estimated cost of alcohol related harm to Canadians is $14.6 billion. “It is believed that 83% of teenagers in Canada consume alcohol”. It is also believed that people who start consuming alcohol at a young age usually become alcoholics (addicts of alcohol) later on in life. Some common street names for marijuana are: “ Pot, Weed, Bud, Ganja, Grass, Hash, Herb, Mary Jane, Reefer, Dope and Chronic”. There are about 2.3 million people who use marijuana in Canada, and the average age when people start to use marijuana is at the age of fifteen. 10% of regular users depend on marijuana, meaning that if they don’t take it, there body reacts by leaving them feeling restless, having loss of appetite, irritability, and having a craving for marijuana. After using marijuana for a long period of time a person’s body can get physically hooked to marijuana making it very difficult for the person to stop. However, it is possible to quit using marijuana if a person reaches out and gets help from someone they trust such as a friend, doctor, nurse or an addiction counselor. There are also addiction assessment centres and self-help groups that can help a person from getting rid of that marijuana addiction. Thirdly, the most misused prescribed drug is Fentanyl. Fentanyl is manufactured in China and is shipped off to places in Canada in many different
