In Between The song itself is about someone who is stuck in the middle between who they are, and who they are trying to become. This song relates to the unsuccessful Wes Moore, and how he tried to become a better person. Towards the end of the book, Wes comes home only to find his girlfriend Cheryl high from heroin, despite the fact that she is pregnant. Seeing this makes Wes realize he no longer wants to continue on with the life he is living. He decides to try and desert his drug fueled, crime ridden life and enrolls in the Job Corps. In the story, both Wes’s face situations involving drugs, but they react completely different. The successful Wes Moore was able to evade a life of drugs, but the other Wes was not. Part of the reason as to why Wes resorted to drugs could have been because he wanted to be distracted from his life. It’s obvious that neither he, nor the other Wes, had it easy growing up. They had no dad, money was short, and each boy lived in a poor town. The unsuccessful Wes was unhappy with his life. In the song it says, “Bittersweet migraine in my head, it's like a throbbing toothache of the mind. I can't take this feeling anymore.” In this line, the “bittersweet migraine” is describing the feeling of unhappiness. Since novacaine is a pain killer, the drug can be used to try and get rid of the unwanted feeling of depression, so Wes used drugs to try and forget about the life he lived. Another lyric in this song is “Jimmy says it's better than here”. Not only does this line describe how being high takes away the pain from everyday life, but it also represents peer pressure. In the town where Wes had lived, there were an innumerable amount of people who used drugs, even children his age.
