Margarita Engle is a very inspiring writer and poet. She is Cuban and loves her home. She grew up in Los Angeles and spent summers in Cuba with her family. Ever since she was a little kid, she would go on walks and write poems. Before Engle became a full time poet/writer she wanted to be a botanist. She is married and enjoys walks in the forest with her husband and dog. Engle promoted the meaning of home, freedom, and living life to the fullest, through her literary works, including, The Surrender Tree , Enchanted Air , and Drum Dream Girl.
Engle’s text The Surrender Tree impacted fighting for your home and freedom. In this book it shows the struggle in Cuba. Also how one girl helped out the slaves in the camps and her courage (Engle, Surrender Tree). “Slavery by day, then, suddenly by nightfall- freedom” (Surrender Tree quotes). This means that the people of Cuba are slaves, but will soon be free. This text was important because it showed how one girl fought for her home and freedom and others could do the same. Freedom to women in Cuba is not known at this time. Three girls of different backgrounds join together and travel the countryside while forming a bond with one another (Drum Dream Girl). “And the comforting path of her own heartbeat” (Drum Dream Girl). This quote is saying that she is going to where her heart is telling her to. She is not listening to what she should do or what other people tell her just what she wants to do. In this book it really showed what courage and freedom really means. The girl who drummed even though girls don't drum, she didn’t listen and followed her heart. That showed real courage and freedom.
