Every member of a marching band is important, but some may argue that the drum majors are the most important people in the band that are a part of the student body. Drum majors are mainly responsible for the togetherness of the band, whether through tempo on the field or street, or the overall togetherness as a band community. Specifically for the senior drum major, it is important that the candidate has the ability to carry out all duties such as instruction and conducting, a prideful and passionate spirit for the band, and past experience of leadership to look back on to continue to lead well. I firmly believe that since being the junior drum major, my ability, pride, and experience have only improved and that I am the best candidate for …show more content…
With this duty to assist, the drum majors must know a lot of different things to be able to help everyone. In order to keep the band together, the drum majors must know how to conduct the band on both the field and the street. This way, everyone watching the drum major is able to keep track of the tempo and beats. On top of that, those who are able to see the drum majors fully can also watch their footing so they can stay in step better. I’ve learned how to conduct, march backwards for street conducting, all of the whistle commands, and pretty much any skill one could think that a drum major needs to know and execute. This is important because in knowing these skills already, we won’t need to go through the trouble of training two new drum majors in favor of just training the junior drum major. Having a senior drum major that was also the junior drum major is important because with someone who already knows what they are doing pretty well, the junior drum major has a reliable person to look up to for guidance and inspiration. Since we only have two drum majors, one senior and one junior, other members of my class do not have the experience I possess relating to being a drum major .It would just be more simple to keep the drum major who already knows the gist of the work, especially with a new drum major coming in as a junior who needs someone as a guide. I would also love to continue being a drum major and representing the band like I have this past year, and I would love to help bring up a junior who has the same ideas and aspirations of this band that I
