Joby didn't want to be in the war because he felt lonely and afraid. In Drumbeats and Bullets the main character, Johnny Clem, was Chase page 2 a 12-year-old boy, who wanted to be in the war to fight, but was too young so they told him to be a drummer boy. Johnny wanted to be in the war because he wanted to fight off the enemies, but he was not allowed to. Each story had a General that spoke to them. The events in The Drummer Boy of Shiloh starts with the boy being startled by a bird that flew off a branch. Joby watched his family leave him and became upset until the General showed up and spoke to him in a stern yet gentle way. In Drumbeats and Bullets, it starts by the drummer boy waking up the soldiers, bored of playing a drum and not fighting.
