In the book, Jonas was living at the lighthouse, and Lenina surprised him. Without thinking he started hitting her with a whip, “Like a madman, he was slashing at her with his whip of small cords. ”(257). The next day when he woke up he was “stupefied by soma”(258) and then “blinking in owlish incomprehension at the light; then suddenly remembered-everything”(259).
