River Panish SPCM 200 Lydia Kauffman April 18, 2016 Policy Speech Outline INTRO: Imagine losing a loved-one to a preventable alcohol related crash. Hard to even think about, right? Drunk driving is a plague to our nation that causes many accidents every year. This problem can be stopped, or at least drawn back to a point where roads would be safe to travel again. DUI checkpoints, along with breathalyzers built into vehicles could bring drunk driving to a much safer level. With this speech I hope to inform you about drunk driving, explain its many harmful consequences, and provide a possibly full proof solution. ISSUE 1: NEED Drinking and driving, it caused 9,967 deaths in 2014. According to madd.org it also caused an additional 290,000 injuries. Every 2 minutes, there is an alcohol related crash that could easily be avoided. Driving while drunk is an incredibly horrid mistake that is clearly made far too often. It’s sad that people attempt to drive while drunk even though there are clearly aware of how that mistake has caused millions of injuries and casualties. Many people believe they are above the law, and this simply needs to be addressed and acted upon wholeheartedly by authoritative figures such as police. There are ways to cheat interlock systems, but with the risk of getting caught would be increased with a more prominent force of law enforcement officers. Based upon facts from intoxalock.com, if anyone ever fails to pass an interlock breathalyzer they get temporarily locked out, and can try again in a few minutes. In some states if the device is failed twice it enters a service lockout which requires your vehicle to be serviced before you may drive again. This has a chance to stop all intoxicated driving if used properly, and could absolutely be life changing for
