The United States is generally viewed as a country of abundance with food plentifully available; however, throughout the United States there are cities and towns that lack access to healthful food sources. These areas are commonly referred to as food deserts. The USDA specifically defines food deserts as areas that are “low-income census tract where either a substantial number or share of residents have low access to a supermarket or large grocery store. ”1 Therefore, areas that have multiple fast food restaurants or convenience stores but no grocery store may also fall into this category.
Currently I am volunteering as a worker at our local food pantry downtown. The pantry is called Hope Distribution and is part of the Catholic Charities program sponsored by the Archdiocese of the Catholic Church. I am volunteering here working the front desk keeping tracks on the clients that utilize our pantry. We issue intake forms for new clients and mark the frequency that a client in need comes to the pantry. Here, I also help guide them throughout the pantry assisting them with the items that they are allowed to make choices on.
Food deserts are a major problem in neighborhoods around the United States and its’ a leading cause of health problems and obesity. Food deserts link to obesity and being obese put someone at more risk of having cancer and diabetes. A food desert is an area where there is lack of grocery stores and limited of healthy whole foods. “The theory of food deserts is that poor people eat poor diets in part because fresh, healthy food is not accessible in areas where they tend to live” ( Wright ). Families in low-income neighborhoods tend to be less healthy than families in high-income neighborhoods due to the unhealthier foods they have to eat.
What criteria should determine your choice of dog food when you are faced with such a tremendous choice of brands and ingredients? Consumers should surely not base their choice on what is advertised on the packages. It is easier for us to choose our own diet and vary the ingredients based on our needs. It is however a completely different matter when it comes to our favorite pets: You are responsible for choosing a balanced diet for your dog, especially that we tend to stick to the same brand of dog food for a prolonged period of time. What follows are some tips that should help you better understand the difference between different types of dog food:
Animals in Research and Testing According to PETA, the animals who are in research and testing “shake and cower in fear whenever someone walks past their cages and their blood pressure spikes drastically. After enduring lives of pain, loneliness and terror, almost all of them will be killed,” (“Animal Testing 101”). Animal-testing is the use of non-human animals in research and development projects, especially for purposes of determining the safety of substances, such as foods, beauty products, and/or drugs. Although animal research plays a crucial role in experiments focused on disease treatments and preventions, it is cruel, inhumane, and should be stopped. This is an act that should be banned and prohibited in all states and countries

This is discussed drawing from three cases of Italian food culture hybridization spanning from the early 20th century to the first decade of the 2000s: the role of Italian food in Italian-American identity as depicted in Leonardo Coviello’s work; the meeting of Southern and Northern food cultures following the Italian internal migrations in the ‘50s and ‘60s; the food practices of international migrants in the context of the global flows of people and commodities in present day Italy. Many people are bewildered when it comes to choosing dog food brands. The sheer number of products on the market is amazing, leaving the buyer at a loss as to which brand to select. Dogs, just like humans, have specific nutritional needs that have to be met for them to grow healthy. Getting the right dog food brand for your dog will make all the difference. You can tell that your dog is thriving on a particular brand by judging it’s health.
Attempts to replace nutrients that have been destroyed by heat with supplementary-and predominantly synthetic-nutrients can never compare nutritionally with the benefits and quality of natural, minimally treated nutrients. At present, there is no way to replace structurally altered fibers or denatured proteins. These alterations make heat-processed foods and their constituent nutrients less bio-available or beneficial, and certainly less effective in maintaining health, preventing disease, and helping the healing processes that normally follow injury. Structurally altered pet foods may actually contribute to health problems (e.g., food allergies or inflammation).
