Is Your Mouth Constantly Dry? It May Be a Sign of a Serious Illness Dryness in the mouth is a common occurrence and it can be completely harmless. However, it can also be one of the signs of diabetes or ankle problems. If you are dehydrated or nervous, dry mouth cavity is a normal occurrence. However, a chronic dryness in the mouth, or medically known as xerostomia, may be assign of a certain health problem that affects every 5th person in the world. Here are some of the most common reasons for dryness in the mouth: • Hormones One of the most common reasons behind dry mouth is menopause. The hormonal imbalance causes dryness of the mucus in the entire body. • Nasal problems Constant breathing through the mouth can be the result of a stuffy nose due to a cold or a pollen allergy. When the stomach acids go from the esophagus to the throat it can cause irritation and inflammation, which can dry out the throat and the mouth. • Coffee Over consumption of drinks that contain caffeine can lead to dehydration. Caffeine is a mild diuretic, which causes frequent urination and tannins cause dryness in the mouth. • Diabetes Untreated diabetes can cause dryness in the mouth. When the glucose levels are high, the kidneys cannot reabsorb liquids, they get released through urination and the body gets dehydrated. Diabetes medicines can also cause dryness. • Ankle problems Rheumatic arthritis, lupus or vasculitis can cause Secondary Sjogren syndrome, a disease which attacks the mucus and saliva glands and leads to dryness of the mouth and the eyes. • Head injuries Some of the temporal glands pass through the temporal bone and the skull.
