Why is Chris McCandless is noble, or brave? He is like this way because he is going to go against the status quote. He is doing actions that people would not normally do in today 's society. People today would not think of doing the sort of things that McCandless did, and ended up losing his life over it. McCandless based many of his actions on things he read by his role models. He developed an ideal society on the teachings of authors like Estwick Evans. Estwick Evans says, “I wished to acquire the...virtues of savage life; to divest myself of the...imperfections of civilization...and to find...more correct views of human nature” (Krakauer 157). In Into The wild, Krakauer narrates the last couple of journeys Mccandless had on his adventure to Alaska where he ultimately died. Mccandless Touched many people's lives through all of his journeys. Mccandless went on these journeys because he was confused in life when he figured out his dad had cheated on his mom. This changed Mccandless to the point he began to hate his parents. Mccandless had a lot of confidence in himself so he left on an adventure to find his identity.

By this point, i think i would agree with Callarman’s opinion because there are abundantly details on how he deviated from his life. He believed that he would be safe and thought he understood everything, however that was not the occurrence. McCandless was an astute, clever kid but was exceedingly obdurate. He did everything he could do to survive but at the end, death was inevitable. There was nothing that he could do nor anyone else, so he had to face the facts.
Throughout all of McCandless’s adventures he often meets new people who take a liking to him, despite McCandless having trouble with the concept of intimacy, as he would rather be secluded from everything. Everytime he is confronted with a new acquaintance, he is always offered goods to help him on his journey. However, McCandless is against the fact that you need to have money to be successful in this materialistic world, and he is trying to challenge that idea by going on adventures without any money, as it would be to easy. In this passage he is resenting the fact that he himself cannot make it in this world without money, but he still chooses to live in that lifestyle because it is a much more free life, away from everyone.
Chris McCandless abandoned the modern world and chose the wild because he believed that he could improve himself through living in the wild, and found the true happiness of the life. McCandless abandoned his wealthy family because of his complicated relationship with his father, and he was ashamed with his father’s adultery. Therefore, McCandless believed that human relationship was not the only thing that forms happiness, instead a man’s connection with the nature brings joy as well. He also believed the habitual lifestyle was not what people were meant to do, and people shouldn't have more possessions than what they need. For this reason, McCandless traveled with little effects.
Most people would think that’s a suicide wish to just go out in the wild, others just thinking it was crazy and wondering who his parents are. Then there are people that find him as an inspiration for going after his goal. McCandless thought it was finally a chance to go on his own and see what’s out in the world. People think that since McCandless died out in the wilderness , he didn’t accomplish his goal. McCandless on the other hand felt the complete opposite.
It is based entirely on opinion that whether McCandless in any way represents what is wrong or right about American character and as an American and growing up in America I am undoubtedly biased. Overall I believe his characteristics of being a hard-worker, optimism, friendliness, frankness, stubbornness, riskiness, and individuality are good, but the abandonment of his family and stubbornness to the extreme are bad. Because McCandless was American this journey and death became a representation of American culture however it wasn’t American values that McCandless felt the drive to do his Alaskan Odyssey but rather arguably it was human nature. There are people of different countries who journey into the wilderness alone recklessly or solo climb mountains without any gear, but we only take McCandless and use him to represent American
Some of these situations could have been prevented yet he decided to do some sort of an “trial and error”. Whether it was kayaking through the colorado river or surviving under extreme weather conditions, McCandless made it his responsibility to beat the odds. So what and who was he proving that he could live within nature and survive?
It is true that Krakauer mentions his own viewpoint of McCandless, but people can still have different opinions on him. For example, in chapter eight people have made up their opinions on McCandless base on reading the Outside article. They said he was “forsaken a loving family,” unprepared, not wise on going to Alaska, and was preparing to die (Krakauer 74). However, that point is not true because it was based on what they read from the article. By reading the article they only know the exterior of him and not know the reason why he went to Alaska.
For this, McCandless should be admired for his views for allowing him to live his best life. In conclusion, McCandless is not a reckless individual who perishes due to arrogance. Instead, he is admirable because his ideals have allowed him to live with true happiness. He waits long years and even breaks his values temporarily in order to achieve his goals.
