Duke University was made in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a commemoration to his dad, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that assembled an overall monetary domain in the assembling of tobacco items and created power generation in the Carolinas, long had been occupied with Trinity College. Trinity followed its roots to 1838 in adjacent Randolph County when nearby Methodist and Quaker groups opened Union Institute.
