One work that outlines the tragedies that solders must endure is “Dulce Et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen. The poem challenges the idea that it is right to die for your country in war. This is done through a first person perspective through a solder in world war 1. The poem is about a soldier travelling with his squad that is attacked by an enemy. Wilfred describes the sequence of events by transitioning from men walking without their boots in mud to surviving a gas attack. Wilfred states, “Gas! Quick, boys!” From a strategic standpoint, this created a slight advantage in the war, the result of this was torturous for the men involved.
