PA 604: Domestic Violence Data Exploration Project My research topic for this data exploration project was influenced by reading the Bureau of Justice Statistics 2014 Annual Criminal Victimization Report. From that publication, an intriguing statistic caught my attention and research interest. “The rate of domestic violence, which includes crime committed by intimate partners and family members, remained stable from 2013 to 2014 (4.2 per 1,000). No measurable change was detected from 2013 to 2014 in the rate of intimate partner violence (2.4 per 1,000), which includes victimizations committed by current or former spouses, boyfriends, or girlfriends” (BJS Criminal Victimization, August 2015). I decided to investigate how this statistic was concluded by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS).
" Since then, the boy carefully watched for his father's movement. When the parents or someone that the child lives with abuse them, they suddenly have to protect themselves from being abused by watching their actions or thinking about how to fight against the parents. In the other hands, children tend to grow up and act like their parents and they do the exact same thing that their parents used to do with them when they were a kid. In 1870, child abuse was first introduced by the events that happened to an eight year old, named Mary Ellen Wilson, who was experiencing several beatings in the home of her biological father and step-mother, in Great Britain. During the 1870’s Mary experienced extreme beating, and was removed from the home (Walkins, 1990). Mary’s story started in 1874, while living with her biological father’s new wife Mary McCormack Connolly. Mrs. Connolly would beat the child, and would not provide for Mary’s basic welfare. It was not until Etta Wheeler, a Methodist mission who visited the home that Mary’s abuse was first confirmed the abuse of a child.

Maddy and Jason were young when they first got put into the foster care system. Maddy has burns down her arms from her father’s cigarettes, while Jason has permanent brain damage from the drugs that his mother was taking when he was in the womb. They were caught being abused from the hands of their mother and father, two people who were supposed to hold unconditional love for them. Maddy and Jason’s abuse did not stop there though, it continued for six more foster homes. Six houses, neighbors, schools, and parents who did not love them even the slightest.
“Homeless on Campus,” by Eleanor Bader is a summary of homeless students on college campuses. Bader taught English at Kingsborough Community College and she was also a freelance writer. This report explains how many students on college campuses are homeless and are trying to continue their education. Bader illustrates her points by writing about students that share their personal stories about their hardships. She also communicates with others who have insight and information about students who have no home and are going to college.
They can’t care for themselves completely because of their age and are easily pressured into silence, especially if the violence is perpetuated by a family member. In The Sum of My Parts, Olga Trujillo recounts her time spent with Dona Graciela and how her father quickly put that to an end when Dona questioned about the violence in Olga’s family. Olga remembers her father saying “Dona Graciela didn’t want me anymore, so I should stop listening for her” (19). Children in sexually violent houses are made to feel like they won’t be loved by anyone else and because of their young age they are easily manipulated to believe they aren’t. Olga also describes the prostitution that her parents put her thought.

The core intentions of most of these programs are geared to ensure that all children receive their basic right to a safe life so that they can have the opportunity to grow and thrive. It is important for children to be taught to recognize, resist report physical and sexual abuse. Children gaining this kind of knowledge will be able to keep themselves safe while they sojourn to the end of the abuse cycle. It is very important to note that child abuse does not only harm the individual child or blighted their success. However, it harms a whole community.
The short documentary “Child of Rage” presents an example of how experiencing abuse as a child can shape the child later in life and how some children can recover. The intrafamilial abuse that Beth experienced as a one year old affected her behavior later in her childhood when she was adopted. Beth was also able to recover from some of the effects of the child abuse she experienced once she was separated from her adoptive family and taken to a special home. Beth experienced intrafamilial abuse at the hands of her biological father after her mother passed away when she was one.
This can be done by people coming and talking to young children as well as creating safe place facilities/ shelters for children to stay at. This is very important because Domestic violence was found to be the number one reason children run away from home. When a child runs away they are subjected to the dangers of the world and do not have the support that they need. These children can be further subjected dangers such as but not limited to; kidnapping, prostitution, homelessness, and drug abuse. Furthermore, it is very important that more shelters be put in place to limit the amount of danger and devastation in that child’s
Child abuse is, thus, the outcome of having cultured or experienced dysfunctional childcare practices, or not having learned these practices. For instance, someone may have violent behavior because he or she has learned it from other aggressive role models, thus they will rely on such ways to discipline their own children as punishment. Though this is theory takes into accounts the importance of the development of an adult, it could not explain why although boys and girls are likely to be abused, still men are mostly represented among the offenders.
