The commercial I chose for my essay is called “Rapunzel and Dunkin’ at Home Coffee” commercial. This advertisement depicts a Disney character enjoying a cup of coffee from Dunkin Donuts. In the video, the coffee is so good that Rapunzel refuses to let down her hair and leave with the prince. This advertisement is an effective way to attract customers to the Dunkin Donuts brand. Different aspects of this commercial such as the rhetor, the underlying message, the target audience, and the rhetorical triangle will be evaluated to reveal its overall message. What is the message? A message is a form of communication that allows rhetors to get their ideas across to an audience. This message reveals important subject matters, which induces a desired change. The message of this commercial is that a home with Dunkin’ is where you want to be (Dunkin’ at Home 0:27). This message is conveyed throughout the video, especially by the narrator’s phrase toward the end of the commercial. The audience is persuaded to believe that drinking Dunkin Donuts coffee at home is one of the best experiences ever. 4. Who is the intended audience? An intended audience is a targeted population of individuals who are more likely to be interested in a particular brand or product. The intended audience of Dunkin Donuts is people who buy food at Dunkin Donuts every day. It was confirmed that Dunkin Donuts customers range between 18 to 54 years old with most of them obtaining a college-level education or an active working status (Hagialas et al. 8). The use of ethos is presented in the “Rapunzel and Dunkin’ at Home Coffee” commercial. For example, the use of pathos is revealed when Rapunzel said ‘hmm, that’s great’ after tasting it (Dunkin’ at Home 0:06). Afterwards, she immediately decided not to leave with the prince, which is not what happens in the actual story. Her decision not to leave the tower makes the audience have that same desire for the Dunkin Donuts coffee since it tastes so good. 8. At this moment, what is your stance on the ad: Is it effective at delivering its message--or ineffective? Briefly explain. This commercial is effective because it attracts new customers to buy Dunkin Donuts coffee. The message that the home of Dunkin is where you want to be encourages new customers to buy their product. However, some elements could have made the ad more effective. It would have been better to see Rapunzel drinking the coffee more. Another suggestion would have been to omit the idea of drinking coffee only at home because it limits the perspective that coffee can be consumed everywhere, including places such as college or work.
