Dwight Eisenhower Accomplishments

Dwight D. Eisenhower was one of the most extraordinary minds in the Allied Forces throughout World War II. He was the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in the events leading up to and during the D-Day invasion, and he designed Operation Overlord. Eisenhower’s strategies caused minimal casualties and got perfect results. He worked his way from the bottom all the way to the top of the ranks in the American Army, impressing everyone along the way. He couldn’t afford a college education, and the West Point Military Academy was free. In the academy he was an average student, and after graduating in 1915, the only direction he was fit to take was in the military. Two years later in 1917, Eisenhower was promoted to captain when The United States entered into WWI, but he was never deployed abroad throughout the war. Instead, because of his outstanding organizational skills, he was sent to Camp Colt, Gettysburg, where he trained one of America’s first tank units. Eisenhower was then sent to the Panama Canal Zone, where he served under Brigadier General Fox Connor. He learned a lot from General Connor about military history and how to learn from previous military campaigns. Afterwards, he graduated first in his class from both the Command and General Staff School and the Army War College. After being promoted to major, in 1935, Eisenhower was sent to the Philippines alongside General Douglas MacArthur, whom he attended West Point with. They were to help strengthen the military defenses in the Philippines for fear of Japanese attack. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1941. Eisenhower was quick to impress General George Marshall with his management skills, who then put him in charge of all Allied Forces in Europe and promoted him to Lieutenant General. General Eisenhower succeeded in pushing German forces out of North Africa in May 1943. He then moved his troops to Italy, where he fought with General George Patton. Although the fight in Italy was difficult, they were still successful. Eisenhower was then made Supreme Commander of The Allied Expeditionary Forces, and placed in charge of planning Operation Overlord, where the invasion on the beach at Normandy in June 1944 was a huge success.
