In this situation we are aware that Janelle is the superior and Tom and Joan are the subordinates. Joan is upset that her team does not get the same attention and opportunities that Tom’s team receives from her. With this information we can figure out some things about Janelle’s leadership. We can tell that she has established a dyadic relationship with Tom and Joan, except Tom and Janelle’s relationship is at the partnership. With Tom and Janelle’s relationship being stronger that may have caused Tom’s team to receive more opportunities to take greater risks and assignments because she has built more trust with him. Why has Joan’s group become a part of the out-group of the organization while Tom’s group is a part of the in-group? In-groups and out-groups are based on how well the subordinates work with the leader and how well the leader works with the subordinates. Along with this, there is a social aspect to decide which group you will become a part of. Like, if you have more in common with the leader personality wise there is a much greater chance that you will be a part of the in-group. Also, the more the subordinate is involved in the organization and how willing they are to dedicating more time to the leaders goals, the subordinate is more likely to become a part of the in-group. If the subordinate goes out of their way to perform certain tasks that may not be asked of them, then the leader will do the same for the subordinate. So, if you were to become in the in-group, like Tom, you would most likely be at the higher side of the acquaintance phase or the partnership phase. You work well with the leader and the leader works well with you because you have established an understanding. You may also attend social work events with the leader and find extra tasks to do to satisfy your leader. All of this allows you to
