Ella Fitzgerald and Ethel Merman are both prominent singers who take Cole Porter’s song and interpret it into their own. Though each rendition is distinctive to their own style, they are similar in the way that the instruments accompany their voices throughout the song. In Ella’s version, the instruments in the background create a melody that support Ella’s voice even though it is improvised. Though the instruments in Ethel’s version is more orchestrated the rhythm and melody are never unchanging in order to maintain the musical tone she has created.

Language is a method of communication that all humans are all too familiar with – it is the way we speak to one another, express our emotions, our wants, and our needs. André Alexis, in his novel Fifteen Dogs, explores the importance of language, human intelligence, and the flaws that language may entail. Fifteen Dogs begins at a bar in Toronto, where Greek gods Apollo and Hermes decide to grant “human intelligence” to fifteen dogs for a wager they construct. Apollo feels that none of the dogs could die happy if granted human intelligence. Hermes only needs one dog to win the bet, and so the gods proceed to grant the dogs intelligence; the bet is on, and we begin to see the struggles of the individual dogs.
The short story “Section 8” by Jaquira Diaz is about a young adult, Nena, struggling to accept her feelings towards her friend Boogie. Further hindering the young woman is the unsupportive environment she finds herself in where just about everyone’s family has either physically or emotionally abandoned them. The story ends with Nena finally standing up the bullies who’ve been attacking Boogie- however Boogie herself rejects Nena, leaving her to imagine a life where the situation ended happily. Not only does the story leave a large impact on the reader, but it also leaves the music of poetry singing in one’s ears throughout the text by the use of consonance. The repetitive use of consonance and internal rhyme are scattered throughout the story, although the most impactful and noticeable would be the very first line of the text.
Throughout Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon, music is a driving omnipresent force, revealing hidden truths about Milkman, Macon, and Pilate. If we were to apply a Freudian framework to Milkman’s familial life, Macon would be his ego – eternally in need of material possessions in order to create an image of himself he can admire – and Pilate would be his id – buried emotions and subconscious desires, overshadowed by his unforgivingly-egotistical Macon Dead exterior. Over the course of Milkman’s journey, music acts as a God-like omniscient presence, ultimately guiding him back to where he started, but flipped: instead of Pilate singing to Milkman as he is born, Milkman sings to Pilate as she dies.
