a. A character is the person who is involved in what happened in the story that has quality which remains with you even after you’ve finished reading, watching, or hearing the story. The fictional characters are developed by the author through details and dialogues focusing on what the characters do, think, say, and hear. In a short story, as reader you might fall into emotion, and you drift into a value of judgement which make it feel like it real story.
b. Static character is a short story character that does not develop or stay the same into conclusion of a plot; they are there to help drive the story. The character fire-eater is static because he is there to help the plot but does not develop as story goes on. On the other hand Dynamic character in a short story is more like a story that changes as the story develops. Flat character is a simple character that does change or develop throughout the story. In the story “Jim” by Roberto Bolano, the amount of details and the atmosphere made the characters believable. The character of “Jim” how he was described in story added making it more believable. Jim was former Marine but now he is now a poet, and also how Jim’s physical appearance compared to that of the country side “...his red neck, summoned up the image of a lynching in the country...”(42) Jim how he was captivated by the fire-eater but wanting more action. The atmosphere where the story took place and the fire-eaters character feels real when “he’d fill his mouth with flammable liquid and spit out a long snake fire.”(42) The amount of details made it feel like true story. How they felt the fire heat so close and scary ”sometimes the flames came within the yard of where we were standing. What are you waiting, I said you want to be barbecued in the street?
