One night in the town of Sleepy Hollow there was a man who stood across the Sleepy Hollow bridge. It was the headless horseman. He stood across the bridge waiting on someone. The person was Ichabod Crane. That night Ichabod was at a party where everyone was talking about ghost.
In the story, he is Ichabod’s greatest rival in the fight for Katrina’s hand. Brom teased Ichabod the stories about ghost and goblins to makes him scares and had compete against with him to win the fruit punch. Ichabod Crane disappears, then Brom Bones marries Katrina. In the movie, he is who scares Ichabod in a prank by posing as the Headless Horseman. He arrived and shoots at the Headless Horseman, but the Headless Horseman doesn’t try to kill Ichabod or Brom.

Although Ichabod is the protagonist of the story, he is more of an anti-hero who does not seem to deserve marriage to Katrina. That he fails is a kind of poetic justice to punish him for his selfishness. Brom seems somewhat more genuine than Ichabod in his attempts to win Katrina’s hand, for he is willing to fight tooth and nail to defeat his rival, while for Ichabod it is more of a scheme. Ichabod’s passivity and his blatant fantasizing about Katrina’s money (but not about her) make us think that, coquette or not, Katrina can do better. Brom is more a man of the people, so readers are more likely to be glad that Katrina has chosen him.
In The Legend of Sleepy Hollow the theme of imagination is vivid. Ichabod, the protagonist, is foolish because of his imagination. But he can’t be the one blamed for his imagination because the town as a whole has the same problem: “The whole neighborhood abounds with local tales, haunted tales, and twilight superstitions. ”(4) Since the town has believed these superstitions for such a long time there is no surprise that Ichabod believes in these tales also.
In “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Katrina Van Tassel was never described to have feelings for Ichabod, but did lead him on with her coquettish mannerisms. In “The Pride of the Village,” the military man had conflicting emotions for the woman, but he primarily wanted to seduce her. In addition, ‘the pride of the village’ and Ichabod Crane’s loves left them for someone else, with Katrina marrying Brom and the military man courting the little village maid.
