In this project, it was asked for students to create a visual art project symbolizing dystopian elements in both the novel 1984 and the movie the Matrix. Both share similar aspects in a dystopian society, such as the dangers of an absolute totalitarian government and the power the government has over the individual. In the novel 1984, the story follows Winston through his struggles of fitting into society. Winston wants to rebel against the government, Big Brother, however he knows that he is unable to do so by himself. Winston then meets Julia, and they engaged in frequent intimate activities as there way to rebel. But their romantic relationship ended abruptly when the government made them betray each other. They are represented in this project by Big Brothers face with the Oceania slogan underneath it and the Matrix glasses on his face. In addition to this, both Big Brother and Agent Smith are the main focus of the poster since they are the “face” of the governments controlling society. This also symbolizes how in 1984, posters of Big Brother’s face are everywhere throughout Oceania as a reminder to the citizens to abide by the law. Another aspect of the poster is the city background behind the Big Brother/Agent Smith face, and this is to symbolize the city setting of each story. Throughout 1984, Winston dreams of living in the Golden Country in order to escape the grasp of Big Brother and live in a place free from society. Similar to this, in the Matrix, the “fake” world created by the robots is set in a city and in order to escape their grasp, Neo leaves the matrix to enter the “real world”. The city backdrop symbolizes how both of the controlling powers in the stories even manipulate the surroundings of the citizens in order to control
