As the world is becoming increasingly dominated by technology, the future of the job pool is lessening in certainty and number. If this problem continues on, it could potentially create a completely different society from the current world. This problem could become the dystopian that civilization is all too familiar with. The lack of jobs for the population is a problem because the numbers of unemployment are increasing and if this goes on, there will be few quality jobs for people. Although concern is rising for this problem, it is a problem that has been increasing since the beginning of technology. According to a study by Michael J. In the twentieth century, one third of Americans were employed in agriculture whereas today, only 2% are (Metcalf). This is one of the effects that technology has on society. Situations like this cause an impact on income distribution because of the large number of jobs being taken away. The middle class in the U.S. has dropped by four points nationally, according to an article from Pew Research Center. This is partially due to the influence of technology on work; the middle class is decreasing because technology is capable of the medium-skill jobs. The high skill jobs have had an increase in pay, the low skill jobs have had a decrease in pay, and a lack of a middle class as arisen. Lastly, 7.5 million retail jobs are at risk for being replaced by technology within the decade (Cornerstone Capital Group). Jobs that only require a high school degree are the most affected by technology in the workplace. Because they require less skill, they are easier to replace for a cheaper price.
