To illustrate, in the intriguing dystopian novel The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, the protagonist, Jonas, receives memories from a man known as the Giver. In order for him to successfully complete his training for his new role in his community (The Receiver of Memory), he will need to acquire memories. When the Giver transfers a memory of Christmas to Jonas, he views a cabin with colourful lights, and inside the cabin was a family unwrapping presents. There was laughter, and warmth. The family consisted of children and adults hugging each other, though some of them were old. Psychologically, Jonas didn’t know how to distinguish this. He was torn. The Giver then explains to Jonas that those old people were called grandparents, meaning the parents-of-parents. The Giver then also explicates that the family hugging each other and laughing together was called “love”, a feeling and emotion, according to the Giver. This left Jonas feeling dumbstruck as no one knew what this feeling was and had no ability of how to interpret it. Jonas now begins to understand that there once was love in his dystopian society. For final analysis, Jonas experiences both an outer, global journey through this memory amalgamated with an inner, psychological journey trying to process
