The short story “Harrison Bergeron”, by author Kurt Vonnegut, signifies the common characteristics of dystopian literature. Vonnegut informs the reader in the first line of the story “THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal”. (Vonnegut 1). This depicts a “futuristic, imagined, universe” (ReadWriteThink 1) where “information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted.” (ReadWriteThink 1), which are both common characteristics of a dystopian society.
