Have you ever wondered what life might be like in the future? In “The Machine Stops” E.M. Forster wrote about a dystopian society in the future. Society today is not what he thought it would be like. Life in “The Machine Stops” and life today have differences in how people travel, how people act around each other, and how people live.
One big difference in life in “The Machine Stops” and life today is the way people travel and how often people travel. For example, in “The Machine Stops” people rarely traveled. Forster in “The Machine Stops” says:
Few travelled in these days, for, thanks to the advance of science, the earth was exactly alike all over. Rapid intercourse, from which the previous civilization had hoped so much, had ended by defeating itself. What was the good of going to Peking when it was just like Shrewsbury? When Vashti got on the air-ship to go see Kuno, she was the only person there that was traveling on her own free will. Everyone else on that air-ship was being forced to travel by The Machine. People in “The Machine Stops” would just stay in their rooms; everything else, doctors, food, entertainment, would all come to them. Because of all the time they spent underground, they missed the beauty in the planet. The green trees, the blue sky, the fresh air; it was all taken from them because they did not travel. Compared to how often people travel in “The Machine Stops”, our lives are much more active. People today seem to never stop traveling. Every morning people wake up and commute to their daily lives via car, plane, or sometimes even boat.
