A. When considering and implicating writing for ELL students I need to make sure that I have to explicitly teach the principles of writing. One thing that is very important is that we need to be aware of what the student’s first language. This is a larger factor because each culture and language have different rules of writing. Some of these factors are directionality of characters, format of writing, and tenses. These are basic, but could mean that the students do not have these and it is important to start at the beginning. As a teacher you need to do this in order to make sure that each student is assessed. Another thing is teaching each student about the different types of writing. Being that I teach preschool we do not have a lot of writing that takes place in the classroom. However, I do teach the students that the way we speak is not the same way that we write. First teachers need to know what skills students have in writing already whether it is in their 1st language or their second. Students should be assessed with what skills they already have in their 1st language because this can be a big indicator of they already know about how to write and the different areas of writing. The first language writing can be a great tool to use. In some cases students may be able to tell you more about a topic in their first language for many reasons. The student may not have the words in English to express their knowledge they already have. They may not be comfortable to writing in the second language. So allowing students to still use their first language can enhance their understanding in English. This does mean that you would have to translate the writing from the first language to the second language with the student, but this can give the students one on one time and help make the writing process more
