Author’s Statement

ENGL 160 was one of the best classes I took this semester. It focuses on the writing projects had a theme that allowed me to voice my points of view through my writing in the diverse setting at UIC. Often teenagers are not taken seriously because they are considered unstable. However, this class showed me that through writing there is a bigger message that can be communicated than being vocal. The class had material relevant to the issues revolving around the judicial climate currently in the U.S. I learned that English does not necessarily need to be boring or the readings that interest me don’t need to be within academic standards. This project consisted of two parts. The first was to gather three op-eds from the NY Times and analyze what genre they belonged to, provide the audience, the tone that it usually had. The second part was to write our own op-ed. The topic I chose to write on was one that I was passionate about: Mexican Students Oppressed through assimilation. Although my knowledge on this topic was not the best, I researched and included other sources that would back up my claim.
It was easy for me to brainstorm some ideas since I already had some personal experiences on the topic. It was difficult for me to manage my ideas properly although I had gone to the writing center for help. I went to office hours for elaboration on the comments of the second draft which cleared up a lot. After Prof. Guerrero explained why I had excessive unnecessary information, I was able to go back and edit so that I would only include what made my paper a stronger point.
I learned that it is important to manage my time properly. I was up all night the day before it was due. However, I got it done in time for the due date. The genre that this pertained to was in my age group, so it was easy to relate it to my educational career.
