Early childhood education is about teaching and encourging children to develop their thought process, creativity and to become their own person. These ideas and the love of children, has helped my decision to pursue a career in early childhood education. My philosophy has been strongly influenced by the philosophies and theories of Lev Vygotsky, Jean Piaget, Maria Montessori, John Dewey and Fredrick Froebel. I value the idea of an early childhood education that focuses on the child's own wants and needs, and on play-based learning. Children should be in a safe environment, where they can learn through self directed play and discovery. This will help them gain independence and develop skills that are needed later on in life. Keeping in mind, the idea that each child has their own potential and capability to achieve success in anything they do. This will be included in my own teaching practice where I will give positive encouragement to children’s own unique creativity and ideas, as they continue to learn under my care. My role as a teacher is to ensure that children and their families feel welcomed, and comfortable in the centre environment. Teachers need to respect and support the children's families, and include their culture and knowledge into the curriculum( Ministry of Education, 1996). Therefore, I will take responsibility to learn about different cultural backgrounds of the children, families and communities around the centre.
