Has one known about the first American colony? The colony that started an entire country? That amazing but horrible place was Jamestown. Jamestown was the first permanent colony in America, and it was located in Virginia, up the Chesapeake Bay. It took many deadly years to form with threats all around the colony, but it was able to survive. One great question about Jamestown was that why did so many early colonist die? Three possible answers to that question is that the colonists were unprepared, the location was horrible, and because unexpected things happened. Most of the colonists were unskilled, and only a few were crafters (gunsmiths and blacksmiths), doctors, and hunters. They also picked a horrible location near many Native tribes. Lastly, they had no idea what things could happen while they were there. The first reason why the colonist might of died so early was because they were unprepared. The colonists were only going to the new world to get riches, and they only prepared defenses for sudden attacks from the Spanish, but didn’t know about the other dangers like Native Americans or diseases. One reason why the colonists decided to build Jamestown up the Chesapeake Bay was to get away from the Spanish, but Jamestown was almost surrounded by Native Americans that could attack at any time.
