As Mahatma Gandhi once stated “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Growing up in a developing country in West Africa where diseases, such as polo, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis were common and combined with bad health care services made easily prevented diseases fatal. The outbreak of Ebola in Africa points to the shortage of medical and/or emergency services. I watched my cousin helplessly died to the hands of Poliovirus. As a kid, I was denied polio immunization in combination to no access to clean water and basic medical needs. This inadequacies made becoming a medical doctor, advocating for these disease eradication or providing a polio vaccines to a kid in Africa my career goals. At 16, I started volunteering in different hospitals and community services in addition to reading medical articles and journals. During the summer of this year my life was changed when I was selected to do an internship at Jersey City Medical Center. During my internship I experienced how diverse a doctor’s job can be; not just talking/listening to the patients or patient-family or performing surgery but also- empathy and compassion being key to delivering an effective care to their patients. I realized the importance of treating patients in a life and death situation and the skills to deal with the health implications of both physical and psychological complaints. I was able to observe doctors communicating in difficult situations such as talking to a family member of a patient who was in critical condition. This did not deter me from the pursuit of becoming what I believe in. In fact, it compels me to embrace the success of medicine and I hope the scholar program at your school will guide me into the footsteps of a trained medical
