Pyrmont is the most densely populated suburb in Sydney, with a population density of 13 850 residents/km2, located 2 km west of Sydney CBD, 33.8737° S, 151.1957° E, and has a population of 12 813 (2016 census). Factors that have shaped the urban settlement pattern in Pyrmont-ultimo include historical aspects and new technologies. Urban growth in Pyrmont resulted in impacts on three dimensions: economic, social and environmental. Pyrmont was originally a peninsula of shipyards, wool stores, mills and coal power stations. Following a number of government initiatives and redevelopment, the area has rejuvenated, attracting new residents and companies.

Urban consolidation of Pyrmont has led to several environmental services and features, which include recycling services, sustainable building design, cycleways and walking tracks, improved public transport options and more open space as well as government initiatives. Bike facilities such as bike lanes and bike pump available in different areas around Pyrmont as well as bike racks, lockers and showers available at workplaces for employees promoting this method of transport. According to the 2016 census, 3,064 people rode their bike or walked to work in Pyrmont. Consequently, fewer carbon emissions due to fewer cars being driven and improve environmental sustainability. Another response to Pyrmont's urban growth is the BASIX program, enforced by the government which aims for more efficient usage, reduce 40% of potable water consumption and reduce 50% of greenhouse gas emissions. In other words, new buildings must reduce usage of resources through the establishments of resourceful, energy efficient products and materials, essentially less pollution. Pyrmont is home to the headquarters of several corporations, telecommunications and entertainment companies including Vodafone, Google, Seven network, and radio stations Nova 96.9 and Smooth 95.3. Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber of Commerce, PUCC, promotes sustainable economic growth, involving all levels of the government, offering networking communities, support, access to data and information into government policies; it also aims to raise awareness of Pyrmont's businesses and educational facilities and improve overall economic advantages for the precinct. In Pyrmont, there is an overall 47% increase in new jobs due to growth in digital companies. Other positive economic effects of urban growth in Pyrmont consist of better employment prospects and higher wages; this is apparent as Pyrmont has a significantly higher income with 38.7% of households earned an income of $2500 or more per week compared to the city of Sydney with 31.6% of households earned an income of $2500 or more per week (2016 census).
