Legalization of MDMA in Europe The desire to be happy occasionally leads people to try out a psychoactive drug. MDMA can cause people to feel more connected to each other and possibly experience the greatest time of their lives. Even though all illegal drugs are known to have many side effects, ecstasy doesn’t seem to be one of those. Although many people believe that MDMA should stay illegal in Europe due to health risks, research shows that the drug should be legalized, because it brings people together, reduces crime rates, and helps with psychiatric disorders. There is always a good reason for drugs being illegal; they will always have some sort of bad effects. But there is also the fact that there are overall less crime rates when drugs are legalized or even just handled correctly by the governments. A perfect example is how the Dutch government educates its citizens about the respective drugs. “We've got a lot of education about it and you just make your own choice." (Komarow) The key to success in this case of legalization is education. If people know about the cons of taking ecstasy, they should be allowed to make their own decision, if they want to take it or not. “In the Netherlands, although ecstasy sales are illegal, the permissive policy means that individuals take the risk." (Komarow) If the Netherlands wouldn’t allow people to take their own risks, the police would waste too much time and money in finding drugs and arresting people. Many people would disagree that any drug could actually help people with mental disorders, but research proofed this to be wrong. "Mithoefer was one of many therapists who were convinced that MDMA could play a major role in curing patients of a range of psychiatric disorders, including PTSD." (Conal) Obviously every user experiences the drug differently. Some may have hallucinations, some may experience a horror trip and some users might just have the best time of their lives. Since Ecstasy is known as an antidepressant, there are many users that feel depressed and expect to see a change in their life by taking the drug. After feeling sad and empty for a long time, just being able to take a pill that suddenly changes your world for a few hours is a solution that many people want to take advantage of and there should no one be interfering with peoples ways of finding their own happiness.
