Ed Charles was number 5 on the Miracle Mets from 1967 to 1969. Ed ended his career in the 1969 season and left it with a bang. Ed died at 84 on March 15th, 2018. Ed Charles was the most vital player for the Mets during the 1969 season. Ed Charles was a vital player for at least three reasons. Firstly, Ed Charles, 5 on the New York Mets, was extremely important in the New York Mets 1969 season. He was extremely vital because of how he helped the Mets win the World Series. Ed Charles singled off Baltimore's Dave McNally in the ninth inning of Game 2 of the World Series. He also scored the go-ahead run on Al Weis' sacrifice fly as the Mets won 2-1 for a 2-0 series. Ed Charles was the club’s elder statesman as the Mets made their run to the championship in the 1969 season. Ed scored the winning run during Game 2, making it a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Lastly, Ed was thought to be the “heart and soul of the Mets”. Ed Charles was regarded as the heart and soul of many of his peers. For example, Ron Swoboda, the right fielder on the 1969 team, said, “Ed Charles was this guy; you wanted to sit on his knee and hear how he made it.”. He also said, “He had a physical and emotional grace that most of us didn’t seem to feel." Ed Charles was the most vital player for the Mets during the 1969 season. He singled off Dave McNally of Baltimore in the ninth inning. He also scored the winning run in Game 2 against Baltimore, causing a 2-1 victory.
