Eddie Carbone is the protagonist of the play who ultimately becomes the tragic hero. Hamartia is a factor that can be seen in the play as Eddie’s pride and over-confidence leads to a tragic ending of his life. This element of pride is one of the strong feelings that Eddie portrays. This can be seen at several points with the text but a point where this is particularly highlighted is towards the ending when Eddie says: “He’s gonna take that back, he’s gonna take that back”. The repetition of the words “he’s gonna take that back” almost acts as threat whilst adding emphasis onto the seriousness of the matter. Prior to this, Marco had insulted Eddie before his neighbours and he feels obliged to use aggression in attempt to regain his reputation which had been tarnished. …show more content…

We can see this because despite the severe consequences killing would have, Eddie makes threats to do so. The fact that Eddie swears at Marco is also significant and could indicates that he feels almost threatened by Marco and wants to recover his ranking by showing some more assertion. Pride being one of the deadly sins can be related to this situation as it does ultimately bring about his defeat. Yet still it intensifies the sense of honour that Eddie holds regarding his rank. Beatrice is Eddie’s wife as well as a mother figure within the play. She is the calming yet practical influence of the play which can be seen by the strong feelings of love and loyalty which she possesses. Towards the end of ‘A View from the Bridge’, Beatrice proves her loyalty to Eddie by not attending Catherine’s wedding. Though this seems mainly for Eddie’s sanity, it also benefits Catherine and Rodolfo as their wedding can go ahead without any issues; this highlights her attempt to calm the situation down with all of her family in best interest. She says to Eddie: “Listen to me, I love you, I’m talking to you, I love you.” The constant repetition of “I love you” is what really signifies her loyalty to Eddie as her
