Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer and editor. He wrote poetry and short stories and was well known for it. Edgar Allan Poe writes mysteries and macabre stories. He lived during the 19th century. Edgar Allan Poe’s accomplishments are his short stories that were well known. He was the first to publish a modern detective story which was “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” Poe was the first science fiction author to add scientific details to his stories. He was the first author to make a living entirely off his writing. Therefore, he became the master at writing horror stories. Finally, Poe was the first great American literary critic.
Edgar Allan Poe’s family includes his one sister, one brother, his wife, father, mother and grandparents. When he was three, Edgar, his older brother, and his younger sister were orphans. Their father left them and then their mother died. The children were each sent to different families to live. His wife impacted him positively by supporting his writing career. His tragic childhood impacted him negatively. Edgar Allan Poe’s many challenges prepared him for the life’s work he did. He went to the University of Virginia when he was 17 years old. Edgar Allan Poe found help from his friend, John Pendleton Kennedy. He helped him get a job at the Southern Literary Messenger. Also, the Southern Literary Messenger published many of Poe’s stories and poems. They offered Poe the job of editor. His stories in the Messenger led him to getting many more jobs for different magazine/publishing companies.
