“Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality.” – Edgar Allan Poe. Poe was trying to say that fictional horror isn’t horror at all, it does not possess the power to affect your soul, because fictional horror for most part will probably not happen in reality for my standpoint at least. Edgar Allan Poe wrote many famous short stories and poems throughout his life, and he because of his accomplishments he has inspired a lot of modern day authors, like Stephen King who is an outstanding horror genre writer. Poe’s real parents were both traveling actors, and at the time he was born they were in Boston, but “within three years of Poe’s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia.” By the time that Edgar Allan Poe was three years old he moved from Boston, Massachusetts to Richmond, Virginia, and he did have not much memory

First company he worked for was called Southern Literary Messenger as an editor, and a critic. “Within a year Poe helped make the Messenger the most popular magazine in the south with his sensational stories as well as with his scathing book reviews.” This began to show how talented Poe’s writing actually is, and how it started shaped how became the famous American writer we all know. “Poe soon developed a reputation as a fearless critic who not only attacked an author’s work but also insulted the author and the northern literary establishment.” Which made his reputation grew immensely, and he started become known throughout the country. Poe was quite displease with his low pay and lack of control as an editor for the Messenger, so he decided to move to New York City but because of financial crisis in 1837 he hardly found any type of work.
